This message was emailed to all Monroe-Woodbury families on Tuesday, April 2, 2024.

Dear Monroe-Woodbury families,

As you are most likely aware, a total solar eclipse will cross North America on Monday, April 8. We are excited about this great learning opportunity for our students. Teachers in all grades will be sharing information about the eclipse as part of their science curriculum. The path of totality will make its way to the southwestern area of New York at 3:15 p.m., and it will exit northern New York just before 3:30 p.m.

Here in Orange County, while we are not in the path of totality, we will experience some of the effects of the eclipse during the afternoon hours. To ensure the safety of our students and staff during dismissal, we will be distributing protective eyeglasses that will enable individuals to safely observe the eclipse.

*Out-of-district families may pick up their child’s protective eyeglasses at the Pupil Personnel Services office in Central Valley Elementary.

Important Reminder:

  • We should never look at the sun during an eclipse without protective eye equipment. Please reinforce this message with your child.

  • If you will be picking up your child early in order to experience this event together, please reach out to the main office of your child’s school.

A solar eclipse occurs when the Moon passes between the Earth and the Sun at just the right time and orientation, with the Moon casting a shadow on a portion of the Earth's surface. We encourage families to take a look at some of the following online resources related to the eclipse.
