When NM teacher Miss Bennett approached Principal Coto with the idea of having the entire school community participate in the One School, One Book program, neither one realized the impacts it would have on their students, staff and families. Mr. Elser, NM librarian, and Miss Bennett selected the book Wishtree by Katherine Applegate mainly for its message of "kindness, acceptance and accepting people for who they are," as stated by Miss Bennett.
During a special kick-off assembly, students each received a wrapped copy of Wishtree of their very own. All students enjoyed reading with their families, or listening to the readings done by various school community members via Google Classroom, each evening. Teachers then engaged students in conversations and activities during the school day.
North Main teachers also created "wish baskets" in their classrooms, where students wrote down their wishes. These baskets of wishes are all hanging on North Main's very own wish tree in the front of the building.
According to Mr. Coto, North Main hopes to do this again in the years to come, promoting a love of reading in all students.
