Reflections state winner

The National PTA Reflections program has recognized Monroe-Woodbury Middle School student Anushka Chandyok at the state level for her poem entitled "Color." The program encourages students of all grades and abilities to explore and be involved in the arts. Students reflect on a theme, create original works of art in the categories of dance choreography, film production, literature, music composition, photography and visual arts, and earn positive recognition for their achievements.

The theme for the 2023-24 school year was "I am hopeful because...". Anushka was named NYS Reflections winner in the literature category for the middle school division.

In her artist statement, Anushka said, "This poem expresses individuality, empowerment, and diversity. I am hopeful because my color does not define me, as I have high dreams and hopes that I can accomplish with courage. Color actually shapes the canvas of my life!"

Congratulations, Anushka! Bravo!

Color

In hues diverse, by spirit unwinds.
A hopeful heart in a colorful world.
For I am not bound by all the colors,
But by the brilliance within.

A girl with dreams and hopes so high,
In every shade my future lies.
No palette defines the qualities I bear,
For strength and courage my colors declare.

Don't judge the color of my skin,
Judge me for my heart within.
Color is only on the outside,
It does not define me.
Yet it shapes the canvas of my life.

Hopeful, I stand out in the kaleidoscope of life,
A radiant soul, no color can erase.
In this journey of life with courage and wisdom,
I am hopeful because I am colored.
A part of the canvas of the world, I shall be.
