Be Our Guest” - MWMS Drama Club Mounts ‘Beast’ of a Musical Production
"It takes a village to make music and music to make a village." 8th Grader, Ethan Gordon fondly recalls a poster in one of his music rooms as he reflects upon his experience in the upcoming Monroe-Woodbury Middle School Drama Club production of Disney’s Beauty and the Beast. This year, the Monroe-Woodbury Middle School Drama Club has taken on a "beast" of a musical - pun intended! With a “village” of almost 160 dancing tea cups, talking clocks and candlesticks, a prince turned beast and one iconic yellow dress, this musical production is bound to entertain audiences of all ages. But, this year’s musical is so much more; it is building a community of young, talented performers and giving them a place of expression to call their own.
Jacob Gardner, Monroe-Woodbury High School Teacher and Middle School Drama Club Director, leads these talented students through this iconic tale. “Beauty and the Beast is a classic story that everyone knows, loves and can relate to,” says Mr. Gardner. “This is a story of wishing you had something more than you have been given, but then realizing all you ever dreamed of is right there in front of you. That our dreams are achieved through the help and love of those around us… those people who create our sense of home.” The students have responded to Mr. Gardner's message of community and it shows with beautiful performances by a cast and crew of almost 160 Monroe-Woodbury Middle School students and 10 special guest 1st grade performers from both Smith Clove and Sapphire Elementary schools, Disney’s Beauty and the Beast encompasses a wide community of Monroe-Woodbury’s talented performers.
Disney’s Beauty and the Beast is filled with exciting memorable moments. Enchanted Ensemble member and Cogsworth Understudy Jade Duffy describes her favorite show moment, “...during the song “Human Again”, it’s a waltz and it makes me feel like I’m dreaming on stage.” Kaia Glander (Madame De La Grande Bouche) 8th Grade Drama Club veteran, describes her most memorable show moment, “My favorite song in the show is Be Our Guest. I feel that the high energy of the song brings joy to all of us and our audience. It is a very fun piece and I love the dance!” Disney’s Beauty and the Beast is filled with hit songs such as “Belle”, “Home”, “Be Our Guest” and the title number “Beauty and the Beast.” With original music by Alan Menkin and choreography by Thomas Larke (MWMS Middle School Teacher), Disney’s Beauty and the Beast will have you dancing in your seats and singing the songs well past the final bows.
The Monroe-Woodbury Middle School Drama Club is supported by a talented and dedicated team of MWMS faculty and community members. Costumes by Mallory Greenberg and Technical Direction by Veronica Coloma create stunning details and visuals throughout the stage. Lending their talents and experiences to the Drama Club students, Producer Marie Mignano, Associate Director Noelle Larson, Music Director Maria Diaz and a pit orchestra of community professionals led by Richard A. Schacher, the performing arts are thriving at the Monroe-Woodbury Middle School.
