On December 22, MWHS senior Rohan Sonakya received the New York State 2022 Commendation Award from New York State Senator, and Monroe-Woodbury alumnus, James Skoufis for his volunteer services.
Sonakya works with the local Indian association (India Association of Catskill Region) in a variety of roles, including setting up and organizing special events and ticket sales. He has performed in musical productions for the past 10 years at the Bethlehem Presbyterian Church in New Windsor and has worked with the church on various community events such as 5k races, sales and other productions. All proceeds support future events and local community organizations, such as soup kitchens.
Sonakya also works on performances in his local temple and helps as needs arise. During the COVID-19 crisis, Sonakya and his family made over 1,000 cloth masks for community members using a sewing machine at home.
