What’s more exciting than watching a cooking challenge? Participating in one! Monroe-Woodbury High School students enrolled in Family and Consumer Sciences (FACS) classes teamed up with Army Staff Sergeant Whitney Martin, a US Army Culinary Arts professional, and learned what it takes to become an Army chef during this year’s MWHS Chopped Challenge.

During the two-day course, SSG Martin, a 10-year Army veteran, worked with students to prepare a variety of dishes such as potato croquettes, tuna steak, chicken curry, orange maple muffins, macaroni and cheese balls with maple bacon and cheesecake topped with strawberries.

Judges included MWHS faculty and staff from Albany Recruiting Battalion and Bear Mountain Recruiting Company. Participants were judged on presentation, creativity, technique and taste. Under the guidance of Mrs. Pirraglia, Mrs. Rickli and Mrs. Lee, these students gave 100 percent effort in the kitchen, serving up delicious dishes and working together as teams.

Bon appetit, Crusaders!
