On Wednesday, April 2, two Monroe-Woodbury High School students were among the honorees at the OU BOCES annual Humanities Awards breakfast. This event celebrates seniors and juniors who have stood out amongst their peers by showing an impressive dedication, skill and commitment to the arts and humanities. Congratulations to MWHS students Anna Mallory and Sunny Stein!

Anna's special talent is the visual arts. She immerses herself in art through her art major courses which will earn her a diploma of distinction of the arts. Additionally, Anna is a leader in the National Art Honor Society (NAHS), Art Guild and Drama Club. Her art has been displayed at the district art show for a number of years and on the MWHS windows to highlight her creativity and skill. Anna is the treasurer and mural coordinator for NAHS, and she helps to foster creativity through Monroe-Woodbury schools by volunteering to create bulletin boards at PT, paint windows at the Monroe Library, paint a mural at the Woodbury Common and, of course, volunteer backstage at our HS plays and musicals. In her spare time she enjoys reading and spending time with her friends. Anna plans to attend college to pursue a major in illustration.

Sunny is passionate about integrating both the arts and science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) into her life. She has been dancing and creating art her whole life. She is a cabinet member of the National Art Honor Society (NAHS), Art Club and is a member of the National Honor Society. She has helped to spread creativity through multiple community service initiatives: HS mural painting, Monroe Library window painting and helping at the district art show. Sunny's art has been also featured at the district art show through her 11 years at M-W.

Additionally, Sunny has been a musician for the past seven years (specifically as a violinist in the orchestra and a soprano in the Voice Ensemble). She was the recipient of Music Boosters scholarships in 2019, 2021 and 2023.  She has participated in All-County, Area All-State, All-State, and will be performing at All-Eastern at the end of April. She has extensive musical theater experience and is a member of the Tri-M Music Honor Society. In addition to her artistic and musical talents, she also enjoys indoor rock climbing, skiing, listening to music and reading. After high school, Sunny would like to attend college to major in STEM and minor in music.

Each high school and the BOCES nominated two students to be the recipients of this award. The honorees and their guests enjoyed a special breakfast held at the Country Club at Otterkill to celebrate the students’ outstanding accomplishments in the fine arts, performing arts and the humanities.

Congratulations, Crusaders!
