cartoon and whale reading a book

Monroe-Woodbury High School students in Ms. Rivelli’s English class visited Sapphire Elementary to share children’s picture books they had authored themselves. HS students read their books to first graders and received genuine feedback on their projects, stories they have been working on for the past month.

Kindness and friendship were a few themes for many of the books. Titles such as “Tomato, Tomahto,” is about an apple inviting a tomato to be its friend because they look similar. As one first grader exclaimed, “That’s because a tomato is a fruit!”

Reading groups of high school and Sapphire students were spread throughout the building. Laughter was heard coming from the gym, classrooms, hallways and the library. The first graders were a bit apprehensive about meeting the high school students, but as soon as the reading began, everyone was as comfy as if it was pajama day. Reading is magic!

Great job to our present and future authors!
