Monroe-Woodbury K-1 Art Program

The Kindergarten through first grade level art classroom is a very unique environment and tends to take on the spirit of the children who inhabit it. In the elementary art curriculum, lessons are based on the seven elements of art (line, shape, value, color, texture, form and space). For example, when the element of color is taught in kindergarten, students will learn about the primary colors and how to mix them to create the secondary colors. In 1st grade, however, students build on their knowledge of the primary and secondary colors and learn about warm and cool colors as well. Additionally, the principles of art (balance, contrast, emphasis, movement, pattern, rhythm, unity and variety) are introduced to both enrich students’ exposure to the visual arts as well as to challenge advanced learners.

Kindergarten and first grade students are exposed to a variety of art media and techniques such as paint, clay or drawing/coloring materials. Through purposeful exploration, they are able to create several pieces of art each year that help them to better understand the elements, principles and different ways to express themselves. Additionally, students are given opportunities to examine a variety of cultural and historical references and learn how to participate in responding to or analyzing works of art. All of these aspects exist to increase exposure and encourage further study in the arts.

In summary, the following are some main goals of the K-1 art program…

  • Introducing students to art appreciation, exposure to artists and beginning knowledge of the history of art.

  • Understanding the role of an artist in society.

  • Experiencing visual problem solving techniques and processes.

  • Introducing students to the proper and safe use of art tools.

  • Exposing students to a variety of art materials that are both 2-D and 3-D.

  • Developing fine motor skills.

  • Introducing students to the elements of art and basic art vocabulary.

  • Understanding the process of creating and completing works of art.

  • Learning how to work with others.

  • Increasing self-esteem.
