Multilingual Learner Programs

English as a New Language

The English as a New Language (ENL/ELL) Program provides support to students learning the English language. ENL instruction is a special approach for developing English language proficiency, using a program of classes aimed at developing English grammar, vocabulary, reading, writing, and communication skills. In addition to the ENL curriculum, students receive academic instruction in all other mainstream classes taught in English, with the support of classroom aides and native language materials as needed.

Limited English Proficient

Students with limited English proficiency (LEP) are provided equal access to all school programs and services offered by Monroe-Woodbury Central School District. New York State’s Identification Test for English Language Learners (NYSITELL) screening test is used to determine a student’s identification as a Limited English Proficient (LEP) student. LEP students are evaluated on their English proficiency every Spring using the New York State English as a Second Language Achievement Test (NYSESLAT). Students may be taught in separate ELL classes, or have support within their other academic classes, based upon their level of English acquisition.
Collaboration among teachers, administrators and parents ensures that our ENLs are provided with the support they need in order to help them achieve the Commanding rating and, ultimately, to exit our program. The NYSESLAT is the only assessment that can determine if a student has reached the level of Commanding. Once that level is reached on both the Listening/Speaking and Reading/Writing sections, the student is considered a former ENL. However, that student is entitled to appropriate testing accommodations or other approved services for two years subsequent to their scoring at the Commanding level.
