About the Music Department
The Monroe-Woodbury School District has a long history of providing quality music education for all students, grades K-12.
Music is constantly being made in every building throughout the district. The district administration, the school board and the community share an understanding and appreciation for the role that music plays in every child’s education.
The Music Department offers a comprehensive program in grades K-12.
All students participate in general music class in grades K-6.
In grade eight, students are scheduled for general music if they do not participate in band, chorus or orchestra.

Students may elect to participate in band or orchestra at the beginning of fourth grade.
Band, Chorus and Orchestra are offered from 4th to 12th grade.
Music Theory and Music Production are offered at the high school level.
There are more than 50 performing groups in grades K-12.
The music department enjoys a partnership with students, parents, administration, the Board of Education and the community.
Elementary Music Program
All students participate in a general music class beginning in Kindergarten, extending through grade 6. Third grade students participate in chorus, where they put into practice the singing and rhythm lessons that began in Kindergarten. All third graders also learn to play the recorder. The third grade concerts are a delightful blend of song and instrumental music! Beginning in fourth grade, students may choose to participate in band or orchestra. Once they have chosen an instrument, individual and group lessons are scheduled for students who join our performance groups.
Middle School Music Program
Every 6th grade student receives general music instruction for 10 weeks. All 7th and 8th graders who are not taking band, orchestra or chorus, must take general music for 20 weeks in 8th grade. The intent of the course is to provide a worthwhile musical experience for these students regardless of skill/talent level. Emphasis is placed on developing an affective/cognitive appreciation as a listener for all types of music.
High School Music Program
The Music Department at Monroe-Woodbury High School offers a comprehensive program which allows students to perform in a wide variety of instrumental and vocal performance ensembles. Courses in music theory are also offered. Music education at Monroe-Woodbury focuses on standards of excellence.
Assessment
The New York State School Music Association (NYSSMA) system of assessment and similar assessment tools developed at Monroe-Woodbury are the primary rating and evaluation measures used to evaluate performance outcomes for both individual students and ensemble activities.
Specific goals of music education at Monroe-Woodbury include:
Development of student aptitude and opportunities in music.
The creation of challenges and opportunities in music for students who have either a primary or secondary interest in studying music.
