Spanish Language Courses
Spanish I
1 Credit
This course offers students the opportunity to develop an understanding into the nature of language and the concept of culture. Students will begin to study the language in-depth. Communication skills in face-to-face conversations, reading, and writing will be emphasized and evaluated. Students will be introduced to aspects of the culture through the language. This course culminates in the Spanish Local Comprehensive Proficiency Exam required for graduation.
Spanish II
1 Credit
This course concentrates on the formal structure of the language with continued emphasis on communication skills (reading, writing, listening, and speaking). An increased understanding and appreciation of the culture will also be addressed through the study of the language. This course is open to those students who have successfully completed Level I (New York State Syllabus Checkpoint A) of study.
Spanish III
1 Credit
This course is designed to review the communication skills learned in Levels I and II with much greater emphasis on the writing skill. Students will complete all topics in Checkpoint B of the New York State Syllabus and each student’s understanding, appreciation, and respect for the culture will be further developed.
The course culminates in the Spanish Local Comprehensive Exam for Regents credit. Students who successfully complete Spanish III are encouraged to continue with advance study in the language. A minimum cumulative average of 80% and/or teacher recommendation is required for continuation to Spanish IV.
Spanish IV (College Credit/University in High School)
1 Credit
This course is conducted exclusively in Spanish and is open to students who have successfully completed Level III (Checkpoint B) of language study with a minimum final average of 80% and/or teacher recommendation. The course focuses on advanced grammar and composition, with greater emphasis placed upon oral and written communication. Students will be required to be involved in communicative activities, which improve their skills in spoken Spanish. Students will study and analyze current publications and selected literary works.
Students may enroll in the “University in the High School Program” through S.U.N.Y. Albany and earn four college credits (Intermediate Spanish I) if all course requirements are successfully completed. Students are responsible for all S.U.N.Y. Albany fees.
Spanish V (Language and Literature/College Credit/UHS)
1 Credit
This course, conducted in Spanish, represents an advanced and serious level of study of the language. This course is open to students who have a minimum final average of 80% in Spanish IV and/or teacher recommendation. It provides the students with an intensive study of the Spanish language and literature that parallels college curriculum. Chosen readings from literature will be integrated with language study to further develop written and oral communication skills. The refinement of grammatical accuracy will be emphasized. There will also be a strong emphasis on speaking and listening skills.
Students may enroll in the “University in the High School Program” through S.U.N.Y. Albany and earn four college credits (Intermediate Spanish II) if all course requirements are successfully completed. Students are responsible for all S.U.N.Y. Albany fees.
Spanish for Heritage Speakers
Spanish for Heritage Speakers II
1 Credit
This course is designed specifically for native or heritage speakers of Spanish with oral proficiency but little or no formal training in the language. The course is designed to build on the language base students already possess. The objective is to develop, maintain and enhance proficiency in Spanish by providing the opportunity to listen, speak, read and write in a variety of contexts with special attention given to specific areas such as vocabulary building, grammar and orthography.
This course is conducted exclusively in Spanish.
Spanish for Heritage Speakers III
1 Credit
This course is designed to review the communication skills learned in Spanish for Heritage Speakers II with much greater emphasis on the writing skill. Students will complete all topics in Checkpoint B of the New York State syllabus and each student’s understanding, appreciation, and respect for the culture will be further developed. The course culminates in a Spanish Local Comprehensive Exam for Regents credit. Students who successfully complete Spanish for Heritage Speakers III are encouraged to continue with advance study in the language.
This course is conducted exclusively in Spanish and is designed for heritage or native speakers only.
A minimum cumulative average of 80% and/or teacher recommendation is required for continuation to Spanish for Heritage Speakers IV.
Spanish for Heritage Speakers IV (College credit/University in the High School)
1 Credit
This course is open to students who have successfully completed Spanish for Heritage Speakers III with a minimum final average of 80% and/or teacher recommendation. Conducted in Spanish, the course focuses on the development of all four communicative skills (writing, reading, speaking, and listening), with special attention given to specific areas of language such as vocabulary building, grammar, and orthography. Students will be required to be involved in communicative activities, study and analyze current publications and selected literary works.
Students may enroll in the “University in the High School Program” through S.U.N.Y. Albany and earn three college credits (ASPN 105 Spanish for Bilinguals I) if all course requirements are successfully completed. Students are responsible for all S.U.N.Y. Albany fees.
Spanish for Heritage Speakers V (College credit/University in the High School)
1 Credit
This course is open to students who have successfully completed Spanish for Heritage Speakers IV with a minimum final average of 80% and/or teacher recommendation. Conducted in Spanish, the course focuses on the development of all four communicative skills (writing, reading, speaking, and listening), with special attention given to specific areas of language such as vocabulary building, grammar, and orthography. Students will be required to be involved in communicative activities, study and analyze current publications and selected literary works. This course is an intensive study of the Spanish language and literature that parallels college curriculum.
Pending approval, students may enroll in the “University in the High School Program” through S.U.N.Y. Albany and earn 4 college credits (A SPN 205 Spanish Intermediate Spanish for Heritage Speakers) if all course requirements are successfully completed. Students are responsible for all S.U.N.Y. Albany fees.
