Upper Level Science Elective Courses
Elective Sequence Requirements in Science
Grade 11 or 12 students who have successfully completed one Regents or Honors-level science course may choose to either follow the full year Science course track or the 2-elective track. This track allows students to select two electives for their full year Science course selection. These selections must be made during the scheduling process. Students will be asked to choose their top two selections and every attempt will be made to place the student in their first request.
ELECTIVE COURSES
Astronomy
1/2 Credit
This course offers students an opportunity to explore the basics of celestial bodies and phenomena, such as planets, moons, stars, nebulae, galaxies, and comets. This course includes career exploration in Astronomy, in addition to presenting current day topics in this quickly changing field.
PREREQUISITE:
Successful completion of one Regents science course, or department and administrative approval.
Forensics
1/2 Credit
This course is designed to emphasize the laboratory techniques used by forensic scientists in the analysis of crimes. Techniques studied include analytical chemistry, spectrophotometry, fingerprinting, DNA analysis, crime scene management, and investigative procedures. Case studies of actual crimes are discussed. Additional activities include solving a “murder mystery” and researching an independent case-study of a crime.
PREREQUISITE:
Successful completion of one Regents science course, or department and administrative approval
General Chemistry 1
1/2 Credit
This course is designed to be an introductory course in Chemistry to be used in conjunction with other electives to meet the third year science requirement. Studies include safety and measurements, matter and energy, atomic structure, the Periodic Table, IUPAC naming, and formulas and equations.
PREREQUISITE:
Successful completion of one Regents science course, or department and administrative approval.
General Chemistry 2
1/2 Credit
Students will explore the essential concepts of chemistry as they work to find solutions to problems confronting our lives, our community and the world. The course will explore topics such as bonding, solutions, gasses, heat and thermodynamics, and acids and bases.
PREREQUISITE:
Successful completion of General Chemistry I or department and administrative approval.
Human Biology
1/2 Credit
This course reinforces concepts related to Human Biology as presented in Living Environment including Chemistry of Life, Cell Structure and Function, and Tissue Types. After preliminary topics are complete, students will survey the Integumentary, Skeletal, Articular, and Muscular Systems. Basic structure and function of each system will be articulated. Students will also study common diagnoses and treatments for disorders and diseases related to each system.
PREREQUISITE:
Successful completion of Biology R, or department and administrative approval.
Introduction to Ecology
1/2 Credit
This course is based on current issues in environmental science, such as: natural resource exploitation, impacts of climate change, human population growth, and pollution. Understanding chemical cycles, restoration ecology, and sustainable living practices will be necessary for exploring solutions to these environmental issues.
PREREQUISITE:
Successful completion of one Regents science course, or department and administrative approval.
Natural Disasters
1/2 Credit
This course will investigate atmospheric and geologic related natural disasters, including hurricanes, tornadoes, and other severe phenomena. The impacts of these events on humans and the environment will be explored. Students will work on projects and content designed around catastrophic events using both current and historical perspectives.
PREREQUISITE:
Successful completion of Earth Science R or H, or department and administrative approval.
Physics in Action
1/2 Credit
Students will gain an understanding and appreciation for the physics of motion, forces, momentum, and energy in the context of sports and other physical systems. The course is designed primarily for students that intend to pursue a non science career. There are no extended lab periods scheduled with this course and the course culminates with a locally prepared final assessment.
PREREQUISITE:
Successful completion of one Regents science course, or department and administrative approval.
Physics of Electricity and Waves
1/2 Credit
This course is designed for the student who does not wish to take the more rigorous Regents Physics lab course. Studies include dynamics (Newton’s Laws, momentum, work and energy, etc.), light, electrostatics and electrodynamics, and modern concepts in Physics. There are no extended lab periods scheduled with this course and the course culminates with a locally prepared final assessment.
PREREQUISITE:
Successful completion of one Regents science course, or department and administrative approval.
