Italian Language Courses

Italian I

1 Credit

This course offers students the opportunity to develop an understanding into the nature of language and the concept of culture. Students will begin to study the language in-depth. Communication skills in face-to-face conversations, reading, and writing will be emphasized and evaluated. Students will be introduced to aspects of the culture through the language.  

This course culminates in the Italian Local Comprehensive Proficiency Exam required for graduation.

Italian II

1 Credit

This course concentrates on the formal structure of the language with continued emphasis on communication skills (reading, writing, listening, and speaking).  An increased understanding and appreciation of the culture will also be addressed through the study of the language. 

This course is open to those students who have successfully completed Level I (New York State Syllabus Checkpoint A) of study.

Italian III

1 Credit

This course is designed to review the structures learned in Levels I and II with much greater emphasis on the writing skill. Students will complete all topics in Checkpoint B of the New York State Syllabus and each student’s understanding, appreciation, and respect for the culture will be further developed.

The course culminates in the Italian Local Comprehensive Exam for Regents credit. Students who successfully complete Italian III are encouraged to continue with advance study in the language. A minimum cumulative average of 80% and/or teacher recommendation is required for continuation to Italian IV.

Italian IV (College Credit/University in High School)

1 Credit

This course is conducted exclusively in Italian and is open to students who have successfully completed Level III (Checkpoint B) of language study with a minimum final average of 80% and/or teacher recommendation. The course deals with Italian culture and advanced grammar and composition, with greater emphasis placed upon oral and written communication. Students will be required to be involved in communicative activities, which will improve their skills in spoken Italian.

Students may enroll in the “University in the High School Program” through S.U.N.Y. Albany and earn four college credits (Intermediate Italian I) if all course requirements are successfully completed. Students are responsible for all S.U.N.Y. Albany fees.

Italian V (Language and Literature/College Credit/UHS)

1 Credit

This course, conducted in Italian, represents an advanced and serious level of study of the language. This course is open to students with a minimum final cumulative average of 80% in Italian IV and/or teacher recommendation.  It provides the students with an intensive study of the Italian language and literature that parallels college curriculum. Students will be exposed to a broad variety of literature and other readings from current publications, which will expand their understanding of the language and the refinement of grammatical accuracy. There will be a strong emphasis on speaking and listening skills.

Students may earn college credit through S.U.N.Y. Albany (Intermediate Italian II) if all course requirements are successfully completed.  Students are responsible for all S.U.N.Y. Albany course fees.
