High School Grading System
MARKING SYSTEM
All courses marked numerically use sixty five percent (65%) as the minimum passing grade. All such courses are computed in class rank and grade point average determination. This includes any high school course taken in eighth grade.
Final averages are computed as follows:

REPORT CARD PERIODS
Daily student progress is available to parents and students on the Parent/Student Portal. In addition, report cards are available quarterly during each school year. It is recommended that parents contact the appropriate teacher(s) if there are any questions or problems following each report card. Teacher email addresses are linked on each student’s page in the Parent Portal as a blue link under each class period.
Only final grades (not quarterly grades) contribute to G.P.A..
PERFORMANCE REPORTS
Performance Reports indicating both satisfactory and unsatisfactory performance are available at the midpoint of each of the four marking periods. It is the prerogative, however, of each teacher to issue a Performance Report at any additional time during the school year. Parents/Guardians may expect a minimum of two Performance Reports from each teacher each semester. Remember, daily grades, assignments and comments by teachers are available in the Parent/Student Portal.
NATIONAL HONOR SOCIETY
In order to be initially considered academically eligible for admission to the National Honor Society (NHS), students must have a minimum cumulative average of 92.0%.
Admission to the NHS is also dependent upon the staff’s review of each candidate’s character, leadership and service. Subsequent to the posting of students’ cumulative averages, it is the responsibility of each eligible candidate to complete a formal application. Formal induction ceremonies will be held during the first semester of each school year.
HONOR ROLL
The Honor Roll and High Honor Roll list for all grade level students is posted following the end of each quarter.
Criteria for qualifying for the Honor Rolls are:
High Honor Roll – 89.5% and higher*
Honor Roll – 85% through 89.4%*.
* Cumulative average for all credit-bearing courses for that quarter.
GRADE POINT AVERAGE, RANK, AND SENIOR HONORS
Students receive a class rank mid-October of their senior year. All Monroe-Woodbury subjects that receive a numerical grade (including high school level courses taught at the 8th grade level are computed into a three‑year Grade Point Average (G.P.A.). Letter grades and Pass/Fail are not computed. G.P.A.s are then placed in numerical order to determine the class rank. Students, including early graduates, must attend Monroe‑Woodbury High School for a minimum of four full semesters prior to the senior year to be ranked. Early graduates are ranked with the graduating class. Transfer students with less than four semesters are co-ranked. A final rank will be computed at the end of the first semester of the senior year – a seven-semester rank. This provides the final decision for valedictorian and salutatorian.

The final grade in each course is used in rank computation (not quarter grades). When a subject has been retaken in summer school, both grades are posted on the transcript, and both are used in computing the average and rank. When a course is repeated during the school year, both grades are used in computing rank and G.P.A. Any required courses taken at another school/college, either in summer or during the school year, are posted on the student’s record and are used in computing G.P.A. and rank.
In order to recognize the complexity of the curriculum in our Honors and College Credit/Advanced Placement courses, difficulty factors are employed in determining class rank and G.P.A. Honors courses are assigned a difficulty factor of 1.03. A.P. College-level courses are assigned a difficulty factor of 1.05. (These difficulty factors are only used in determining students’ G.P.A. and class rank. Raw score grades are reported on the report card and transcript.) Honor courses are so designated by our Board of Education. A.P. courses are so designated by the College Board. College courses are those whose curriculum is approved by a college/university with appropriate college credit being granted.
The twenty-five seniors with the highest G.P.A. (computed after the first semester of the senior year) will be designated Honors graduates. The two seniors with the highest cumulative averages will be respectively designated as Valedictorian and Salutatorian of the Senior Class. These students must have been enrolled in Monroe-Woodbury High School as full-time students for a minimum of five full semesters and must attend Monroe-Woodbury High School during their senior year. Early graduates are ranked with the graduating class.
Students participating in an approved Foreign Exchange Program may elect the pass/fail option for selected courses taken in a foreign country and will not be penalized for this decision.
