This course provides a basis for tenth, eleventh, and twelfth grade Regents English courses. English skills are developed through reading, writing/composition, research, vocabulary, grammar and usage, media and digital literacy, and speaking. Literature study is genré-based, and includes the short story, novel, drama, poetry, and memoir.

The course parallels the curriculum in English 9; however, more intensive, independent, interpretive, and creative work is expected in all areas of study.

This course continues to refine and develop work in reading, writing, grammar and usage, vocabulary, research, and speaking. Literature study includes the short story, novel, drama, poetry, and essay, including the technical vocabulary necessary for meaningful analysis of each.

The course parallels the curriculum in English 10; however, more intensive, independent, interpretive, and creative work is expected in all areas of study.

This course is designed to provide a study of American literature from the sixteenth century to the present through a variety of American authors. Students continue to increase their skills in listening, speaking, reading, and writing in a wide variety of analytical and creative genrés. Preparation for the ELA Regents Examination is embedded in the curriculum.

The course parallels the curriculum in English 11; however, more intensive, independent, interpretive, and creative work is expected in all areas of study. Students take the English Regents examination in January as their midterm exam.

AP English Language and Composition is an introductory college-level composition course. Students cultivate their understanding of writing and rhetorical arguments through reading, analyzing, and writing texts as they explore topics like rhetorical situations, claims and evidence, reasoning and organization, and style.

This course parallels the English 11/11H curriculum in that it is a study of American literature.

The Monroe-Woodbury High School Social Studies and English Departments offer an opportunity for interdisciplinary study through the integration of Social Studies and English courses which facilitates in-depth learning and potentially improved academic performance. Students are grouped in one of two grade level cohorts, and experience these classes together in their schedule. The program provides an additional lab type experience on alternate days in the high school cycle. The “conference” period, a smaller class, allows teachers and students increased time to deepen their learning by providing time for writing workshops, writing conferences, research, and integrated projects that enhance the learning opportunities of the courses. For this extra time commitment, students will earn an additional .5 units of credit toward their diploma, in addition to the full credit earned for each subject. Enrollment is limited to 50 students per grade level.

*Enrollment in English 11, 11H, or 11H Humanities may, for those who meet eligibility requirements and choose to enroll through the UHS SUNY Albany program, lead to 3 college credits upon successful completion of this course.

This course is designed for seniors who are ready for a rigorous college prep program. The first semester focuses on student practice and mastery of expository and analytical writing skills with informational texts and the second semester continues this practice with literary texts. Literature in this course will incorporate canonical works from the British tradition as well as other contemporary and relevant texts.

Students who meet eligibility requirements (85% or better overall GPA as well as 85% or better on the Regents Exam) and who enroll with SUNY Orange may earn 6 college credits through this course. Enrollment in the SUNY Orange courses is not required for participation in 12H.

AP English Literature and Composition is an introductory college-level literary analysis course. Students cultivate their understanding of literature through reading, analyzing, and creating texts as they explore concepts like character, setting, structure, perspective, figurative language, and literary analysis in the context of a diverse selection of literary works.

Students may earn college credit through UHS SUNY Albany and/or The Advanced Placement Examination in Literature and Composition. Students are responsible for all course fees and/or for the cost of the AP examination.

This course is mandated for students who have not demonstrated competency by passing the 8th grade ELA Examination, the 11th grade Regents Examination or are in danger of failing the 11th grade Regents Examination. Students may also be recommended by their English 9 and 10 teachers. The course’s emphasis is on strengthening critical thinking and comprehension skills by having students read closely and write reflectively in all genres with much support from the teacher. Classes are smaller in size to allow for individual instruction. This alternate-day semester course may be taken for the full-year on an alternate-day basis.

Students enrolled in English AIS may not enroll in any honors/AP English or Social Studies courses.
