Core Level Business Elective Courses
Business Law
1 Credit
This course places its emphasis on the individual as he/she encounters business law in his/her personal, family and occupational life. Students should gain a genuine understanding of and respect for the law that affects them at home and at work. Units of study include basic legal principles, civil and criminal law, contract law, consumer protection, insurance, wills/estates, and real/personal property. Whenever possible, a field trip to the State Supreme Court in Orange County may be scheduled.
Open to sophomores, juniors and seniors.
Career and College Planning
1/2 Credit
This course is intended to provide students with practical exposure to choosing a career and/or trade, college searches, and preparing the material necessary to apply to college through Naviance. In addition, the course will support student skill development in multiple areas of financial literacy including budgeting. Wouldn’t you want to set goals for your future adult self? Students will learn employment law basics and understand the difference between working in a small business vs. a large corporation, government agency vs. private industry as well as be able to identify what type of management style works best. Career and College Planning will incorporate curriculum for students of varied technological skills and writing ability to ensure student achievement and success.
This course is best suited for juniors and seniors but is open to all.
COLLEGE Accounting
1/2 Credit
This course is designed to develop beginning skills in accounting. This is recommended for students as a basic course in preparation for post‑secondary training in business and accounting. Activities include accounting cycles for a service business organized as a sole proprietorship and a merchandising business organized as a corporation.
Open to juniors and seniors.
2021-2022 Students who enroll with St. Thomas Aquinas College (STAC) can earn 3 college credits if all course requirements are successfully completed. Students are responsible for all STAC course fees.
2022-future: Students who enroll with SUNY Orange (Orange County Community College) can earn 3 college credits if all course requirements are successfully completed. Students are responsible for all SUNY Orange course fees.
CTE (Career Technical Education) Business Management and Administration
This approved NYSED program in the field of Business Education meets the 4+1 pathway for graduation. Program requirements include coursework completion, a possible work-based learning internship, and a 3 part technical assessment (written, practical and portfolio). Students can begin the process as early as Freshman year. Guidance counselors and Business Education teachers can provide additional information to interested students. Students completing the program receive a New York State CTE Endorsement on their diploma.
COLLEGE Sports and Entertainment Marketing
1/2 Credit
Marketing is the tool that has allowed the U.S. economy to be one of the most successful in the world. This is a half year college level course where you have the opportunity to learn the basic functions of marketing and how those functions are applied to sports and entertainment. Heavy emphasis on hands-on activities. Whenever possible, a field trip to a sports/entertainment facility may be scheduled.
Open to juniors and seniors.

Money Management

"How Young Do You Want to Be When You Retire"
This course will help students analyze their personal financial decisions, evaluate the costs and benefits of their decisions, construct a working budget, a balanced checking account and lucrative savings plan. Students will also be able to understand investment strategies, insurance, taxes, and paying for college (student loans) in order to maximize their well-being. Students will learn how individual choices directly influence occupational goals and future earnings potential.
This course is open to all students.
Real Estate Licensing

"Want to Sell Homes for a Living?"
The first step in becoming a licensed real estate broker in NYS is to pass a 77-hour NYS approved real estate salesperson course. Students participating in this course would have to earn a 70 or higher in order to meet the requirement set by the state. Once they have passed this course and turned 18, they would be eligible to sit for the NYS Real Estate Broker licensing examination. The benefits of this course gives students another plan post graduation and offers another avenue of success after high school. Your training will let you foster the delivery of quality services to consumers in the industry. The course outlines all the necessary information and tools that a future real estate salesperson would need to have in this field. The class is a full year long. The course curriculum has been provided by NYS and covers topics such as but not limited to laws, licenses, regulations, management, sales, leases, properties, ownership, pricing, human rights, taxes,and agencies. Business Teacher, Anthony Amoroso, is a certified real estate instructor.
This course is open to seniors.
Social Media Marketing
1/2 Credit
This course explores how web-based applications, services, and social networks are used to identify and target customers. E-Marketing integrates online and offline strategies. Students will develop a social media marketing campaign. Emphasis is placed on real world application and Internet exercises.
This course is open to all students.
“So You Want to be a Millionaire”
1/2 Credit
In the United States, approximately one in twelve people try to start a business, but 60 percent of businesses fail in the first five years. Why? The reason is because entrepreneurs have the vision, but not the business skills to succeed. This course is taught on-line, and each student will have an Internet account for learning important entrepreneurial skills as well as developing a business plan.
Open to sophomores, juniors, and seniors.
The “Keys” to Success
1/2 Credit
This course is designed to help students develop and enhance time management skills needed for being successful in high school and throughout their adult life. Areas of focus are on identifying SMART goals that will help students prioritize school work so that they can enjoy activities in sports, clubs, social and family life. Students will also work on identifying basic decision making skills needed to navigate through making the best possible choices. Opportunities to create items such as job cover letters and resumes early on to see what steps are needed to create a successful activity plan for college or career readiness. Students will also complete research papers using MLA format. Students will learn the basic functions of google sheets to help support research papers with graphs and charts as well as teach students the proper email etiquette when communicating with teachers and professors. All activities will center around applying keyboarding skills to produce these tasks both quickly and efficiently.
Strongly recommended for freshmen.
Work Experience Program
1/2 Credit
The work experience program allows students to earn a ½ credit while working a total of 150 hours during the semester. It can be paid or unpaid. You must be a senior and have transportation to and from work. Additionally, you have to enroll in any business class or attend the work experience seminar which meets weekly. The seminar will cover essential items such as the process of finding gainful employment, resume and application process as well as proper interviewing skills and appropriate steps needed to ensure success of finding employment. If students have already found gainful employment approved per guidelines in Child Labor Laws, then those students will be instructed on maintaining their employment while learning appropriate work ethics and professionalism. Seniors will have a guaranteed parking spot if they sign up and are accepted into the program.
This course is open to seniors only.
PREREQUISITE:
Selection to the program is given to seniors who have transportation to and from work. Students must be available to attend the weekly seminar during 8th period. Must be employed in a non-hazardous job or currently searching for employment. Memorandum of agreement is required and must be submitted to the Work-Based Learning Coordinator.
