The Monroe-Woodbury Athletic Director, Ron Montalto, would like to announce the Athlete of the Week for the week ending April 22, 2016. The “Athlete of the Week” for the Monroe-Woodbury Boys Varsity Tennis Team is junior Zach Price, coached by Anita Wilson.
Zach Price is a second year member of the varsity tennis team. It is my pleasure to nominate Zach as Tennis’ athlete of the week for the many great qualities he possesses.
Tennis’ regular season has just begun, and Zach has been challenged with playing at the most competitive spot in our lineup. He is representing Monroe-Woodbury as our first singles player. Zach spent his off season determined to move up in our line up, and his hard work has paid off. Last year Zach played 3rd doubles as a sophomore, and he has bypassed many of his teammates this year to play at the number one spot to begin the season.
Zach has already encountered three tough matches out of four. His performance on the court has been nothing short of outstanding with some very challenging competition. Yet he continues to play hard, have a great attitude and look for ways that he can improve his game. Many times you see a player on the court who starts to lose focus when the match gets hard. Zach continues to focus and stays calm throughout the match. This is a very difficult attitude to maintain in tennis. There are not a lot of players, even the professional ones, who can accomplish this.
As Zach’s coach I am impressed with the dedication he has shown to putting in the time and practice that is needed to improve his tennis game in so many aspects. He has shown improvement in his strokes, footwork, serve and strategy just to name a few. This is no easy task in such a short period of time.
Overall, Zach is a hard working student athlete, and a dedicated part of the Crusader’s Boys Tennis Team. I am happy to have him as an important part of our team again this year, and I look forward to continuing to see him grow in the future, both personally and as a student athlete.
