Multicultural Night celebrates 10 years of community, food and fun

on May 17, 2017

Thank you to all the wonderful participants in the Tenth Annual Multicultural Night held at the Middle School on April 6. More than 23 countries and cultures were represented! Even before the 6:30 p.m. start time, the event was in full swing with participants proudly showing off elements of their culture and ethnicity through the food they prepared and the beautiful table displays that helped tell the stories of their lives.

Kicking off the performances for this year’s event were four members of West Point’s Benny Havens Band. Band members Sergeant Major Scott Drewes, Master Sergeant Dan Pierce, Staff Sergeant Jongyoon Lee, and Staff Sergeant Jeremy Gaynor inspired us with their rendition of “The Star Spangled Banner” followed by two more songs, “When America Dreams” and “Where the Stars, Stripes, and Eagle Fly. What a thrill it was to watch them perform. Did anyone happen to recognize lead singer, Staff Sergeant Jeremy Gaynor from NBC’s The Voice ‘Season 8?’ You can go online to watch how Jeremy’s audition and had all four judges turn around their chairs for him!

A huge thank you to all the performers:

  • North Main’s music teacher, Pat Murray, and her Select Chorus group of 40 students
  • The Cabassa Family for their Afro-Puerto Rican Bomba performance
  • Varsha Jegan, Aishwarya Rajendran, and Visakhi Miriyapalli for the Indian Classical Kathak Dance
  • Purab Charka, Aayan Krishan, Om Naik, Aman Shetty, and Rohan Sonakya for the Tabla Indian Drum
  • Latvian National Anthem performed by Victoria Kusins
  • Middle School music teacher, Adam Conforti, and students Patrick Coote, Adrianna Lora, Lucas Ouellette and Genica Shellman for their performance on the African Drums
  • Middle School music teacher, Evan Kaufman, and students Andrew Cicale, Francis Heim, William Li, Sarah Molino, Jarelin Pena, Christopher Pezzela, Faith Pucci, Alessandro Severo, Jessica Sissili, Isabella Toledo, and Brian Whitfield

An extra special thank you to Eddie from La Rancherita Mexican restaurant in Monroe for donating two trays of food for the event! Eddie came to the middle school during the day to deliver an order for someone else when he overheard a conversation about Multicultural Night. Without hesitation, he offered to donate two trays of food which he brought by himself later that evening. #mwfam

In addition to our special guest performers from West Point, two West Point cadets participated – another first! Cadet Mirnaqibullah Mirzada represented Afghanistan and Cadet Adis Posko represented Bosnia. Accompanying the cadets were 6th grader, Harrison Reynolds, and his father Jeffrey Reynolds, Chief of Protocol at West Point, as well as Lieutenant Colonel John Nawoichyk, who completed his deployment in Afghanistan just about a year ago. Many thanks to Jeff Reynolds, who so kindly offered his assistance early on in the school year.

The basket raffles were a great success due to the donations and the community’s generosity in participating. $800.00 was raised to split between the food pantries at Monroe Methodist Church and Sacred Heart Church.
