M-W Unified Basketball team scores big with students

on April 30, 2017

Monroe-Woodbury has recently created a Unified Basketball team that pairs special education athletes with playing partners. Basketball is one of the Project Unify offerings in the partnership between the New York State Public High School Athletic Association and Special Olympics New York. It is recognized as a varsity sport at Monroe-Woodbury and five other Section 9 schools. The season is limited to three weeks during May and will conclude with a mini-tournament on May 24 in Monroe-Woodbury. The M-W team is coached by Anthony Verboys, a special education teacher at the high school. He is assisted by sophomore Brendan Bernsley.
