Students in districts throughout Orange County have been hard at work preparing for the upcoming Special Olympics elementary competition, which will be held on Saturday, March 11 from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. The event will take place in the Monroe-Woodbury High School gymnasiums at 155 Dunderberg Road, Central Valley.
Fifty-three student athletes from seven school districts will be competing. Participating districts include:
- O/U BOCES
- Valley Central
The day will begin with an opening ceremony, followed by time trial stations. After a short break, athletes will participate in medal rounds in basketball and soccer skills. Basketball skills include dribbling, spot shot, and target pass. Soccer skills include running and kicking, dribbling and shooting. The event concludes with an award ceremony recognizing the hard working athletes. All events are free and open to the public.
“Providing our special needs students county wide with an opportunity to be the center of attention at an athletic competition is such a wonderful thing. Their smiles and laughter throughout the event is all you have to witness to know why the districts participate in this great event. The Hudson Valley Special Olympic Organization offers many opportunities throughout the state and we are happy to bring a basketball and soccer event to Orange County for our elementary students,” said Bryan Giudice, event co-organizer and Pine Tree Elementary School principal.
This event is memorable for many reasons, but don’t take our word for it…here’s what our M-W athletes and volunteers have to say:
I like tag because you get to run. – Max B. • I like kicking the soccer ball. – Teddy I.
I love playing basketball. – Aaron C. • My favorite part is watching all the athletes achieve their personal best! It is incredible! – Mrs. Escobar (teacher/volunteer)
I love helping my Mom’s students. They work really hard! – Meghan Escobar (2nd grade volunteer from North Main) • I love playing tag with my friends. – Sean T.
I love dribbling the basketball. – Tyler • I love playing tag and seeing my teacher there! – Logan
Come cheer on these hard working athletes!
