Monroe-Woodbury High School PTA presents “Everything You Always Wanted to Know About Transgender,” on Tuesday, March 21 at 7 p.m. in Room 130.
Presenters Randi and Bob Barlow will offer insights and professional and personal perspectives on the following topics:
- What does “transgender” mean?
- Is a transgender person the same thing as a transvestite?
- What’s the difference between gender identity and sexual orientation?
- And what’s the big deal about bathrooms?
Please join us for this hour-long presentation to gain answers to these and other key questions on this timely and important topic. Although the talk is intended to provide information, guidance and support to district parents and teachers, all members of the community are welcome.
The informative address, sponsored by the M-W High School PTA, will be presented by Randi and Bob Barlow – a Monroe-based psychotherapist and a fifth-grade teacher, respectively, and parents of a transgender son. The Barlows also facilitate a monthly support group for parents and family members of transgender and gender non-conforming people.
The presentation will cover such topics as: gender identity vs. sexual orientation; terminology and pronouns; what a gender transition is; and the importance of school, family and community acceptance. After the talk, the Barlows will be available for a Q&A session.
“Parents and teachers of transgender and gender non-conforming students have lots of questions about how to support transgender youth,” notes Ms. Barlow. “Having meaningful answers to those questions can make a huge difference in the health, happiness and well-being of our children and our community.”
