Everyone needs a boost every now and then…especially at this time of year.
Monroe-Woodbury High School students are using a creative approach to helping their peers better manage stress levels by holding Self Esteem Week, December 19-23, for students in grades 7-12. This student driven initiative, led by Mrs. Wright’s Critical Issues health class, is promoting the message #luv_urself to help encourage and inspire fellow students to feel good about themselves.
Why is this an important message for students? In the words of senior Megan Midtbo: “We want Self Esteem Week to capture the idea that everyone is worth something, and that you should definitely love yourself and everything that makes you, you. We hope to accomplish many things during Self Esteem Week; for one week, we want to make the school a judgment free, be whoever you want to be zone. Hopefully this week will impact students for the rest of the year and longer.”
Students will be encouraged to use the #luv_urself hashtag all week long to promote positive messages of encouragement and self worth.
The week will feature the following activities:
Monday, Dec. 19 – Mirrorless Monday – Mirrors in the student bathrooms will be partially covered with messages promoting self-esteem and positive body image.
Tuesday, Dec. 20 – Treat Yourself Tuesday – During their lunch period, students will write down a positive message about themselves and will be rewarded with a candy treat. These messages will be displayed on a#luv_urself banner.
Wed, Dec. 21 – Work It Out Wednesday – Work out your insecurities – Students and staff are invited to wear workout gear! Students will be encouraged to write an anonymous note about their personal insecurities and place it in a sealed box. They will be rewarded with a heart sticker as a reminder to #luv_urself.
Thursday, Dec. 22 – Take A “Selfiesteem” – Students and staff will have the opportunity to take a selfie with friends during lunch periods. The #luv_urself banner will be used as a backdrop.
Friday, Dec. 23 – Fun Festive Friday – Wear your “unfashionable” Holiday Sweater. Show some holiday spirit!
“Planning Self Esteem Week has been very exciting. I’m sure I can say on behalf of my entire class that we are all very proud of ourselves. We can look back on this week and say we started this, we made this a tradition. Even if just one student feels better, at the end of the week it will be worth it,” said Midtbo.
