On Friday, May 20, NYS Assemblyman James Skoufis visited Monroe-Woodbury Middle School to meet with Mr. McCarty’s 7th grade Social Studies students. Students had been learning about the role of the government as it pertains to taxation and legislation.
As part of the curriculum, students took informed action and researched current issues. Using powerful words, they wrote letters to Mr. Skoufis about the issue of taxation on junk foods and super size sugary drinks. Mr. Skoufis was impressed with the letters and wanted to have a conversation with the students.
Mr. Skoufis and the students had an interactive question and answer session on a variety of topics – ranging from proposals for free college tuition to local issues on taxation. The students enjoyed meeting Mr. Skoufis and discussing topics of importance with him. These conversations brought their classroom lessons to life!
